Ringworm is a common infection that is possibly one of the most misunderstood, largely because of its name. The name can be misleading, with most people reaching the conclusion that it must be caused by worms, while parasitic fungi are the actual culprits. Ringworm infections are caused by a fungal group termed as dermatophytes, a group of fungi that are also responsible for various common fungal infections like jock itch, athlete’s foot and toenail fungus.

The fungi responsible for ringworm can affect not just your body but also the scalp, feet and nails.

The infection is quite contagious and can be passed on through direct or indirect contact. If there is direct skin contact or contact with contaminated articles like combs or clothing or even surfaces of a pool or shower there could be an infection.

Certain animals like cats and dogs can also act as carriers. Another condition that favors fungal growth is a warm and moist environment, so prolonged dampness of the skin and the presence of minor bruises or injuries on the skin and scalp can also cause infection. If you are suffering from ringworm of the scalp the infection would last for at least ten to fourteen days, while a skin ringworm infection should be curable within four to ten days.

Fortunately there are plenty of natural remedies that can help treat ringworm, but if there are no visible results you could switch to medicated ointments that are available over the counter. They are also extremely effective and pose little risk. Here are some effective ringworm remedies:
  • Mustard seeds can be used to prepare an effective ringworm remedy. Simply make a paste with the seeds and apply it over the areas of skin that are affected.
  • According to some naturalists raw papaya can also be used in the treatment of ringworm. Simply cut a few slices of the fruit and rub it gently over the affected skin. Similarly, you could make a paste with dry papaya seeds and apply it.
  • Raw turmeric juice applied on to the skin can also help to fight against the infection.
  • In addition to the natural remedies, self care and hygiene is absolutely vital, so always make it a point to keep your skin clean and dry. Antifungal powders are very useful too, and it would make sense to use one after bathing.

Make sure that any personal items and objects that may be contaminated are also cleansed thoroughly to avoid the risk of contagion or re-infection.
