The feelings or experience of a migraine can not really be explained to someone who has not experienced one, and for lack of a better word, migraines are described as severe, chronic headaches. To simply describe and refer to all migraines simply as a severe headache however is a gross understatement. Migraines can cause severe, almost debilitating pain that could last from a few hours to days.

Migraines are often preceded by sensory warnings such as flashes of light, a tingling sensation in the arms and legs or blind spots. The victim may also experience nausea and vomiting, and very often many also experience a heightened sensitivity to light and sound that can make the dimmest light and softest sounds unbearable.

Unfortunately migraines are not really curable as of now but scientists and researchers are working hard to find a cure from this condition.

Currently available medications can do little, other than reduce the severity or induce drowsiness and sleep. The problem with treating migraines is that we don’t really understand the causes. Genetics and environmental factors, both play a role, but both factors have such a wide scope that simply knowing that they are responsible does not help much.  Most recent researches however do point to a link between serotonin levels and migraines. Serotonin is a chemical or hormone that regulates pain in the nervous system.

There are plenty of natural home remedies that are postulated as treatment for migraines, but again most of these are simply ineffective. Even those that can do show some promise have varying results, with the findings or reactions differing in different people. Some branches of alternative medicine however that are quite promising and are worth investigating include herbal medicine, acupressure, massage therapy and aromatherapy. Nutritional therapy can also offer some hope and many have also found changes in environment to also make a difference. Don’t try self medicating but instead consult specialists in the field.

In addition to remedies self care measures are important. Relaxation exercises that could include meditation, yoga, and progressive muscle relaxation are quite helpful and also very inexpensive. They don’t require any equipment and can even be practiced at home daily. Spending adequate time relaxing is important, on a daily basis, whether bathing, reading a book or listening to music. Make sure you get adequate sleep as irregularities in sleep patterns and inadequate sleep can trigger migraines. When you feel a migraine coming on wrap an ice pack around the back of your neck and try to rest in a dark and quite room.
