Alternative Ways of Asthma Cures

Is asthma cureable illness
( 9 Sep 2009)

While it is true that natural remedies and herbal medicine have a lot to offer for asthmatics and patients of similar respiratory ailments, it would be downright misleading to claim that they offer a cure from asthma. Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition from which there is no cure. Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition in which there is an inflammation of the airways.

In an asthmatic the airways are also hypersensitive and there is an excessive production of mucus. The airways being hypersensitive, irritants in the atmosphere can cause severe reactions termed as an asthma attack. Over a period of time the occurrence of such attacks causes a scarring of the lining and a worsening of the inflammation. This gradually causes permanent damage to the airways and only increases the risk and severity of reactions.

The exact causes of asthma are not clearly understood but most professionals agree that allergic reactions are the most common cause, and these could stem from weather changes, certain scents, dust, smoke, pollution, and even through food allergies like a reaction to milk, wheat or certain other foods. In addition, biological factors like heredity can also cause asthma to develop and psychological conditions like stress, paranoia or anxiety can also trigger attacks. Any approach to the treatment of asthma should therefore take into consideration and accept the necessity of avoiding certain known triggers, while maintaining healthy diet and lifestyle patterns. Stress management techniques are also useful as this can help stay calm in normally stressful situations, thus helping to avert an attack,

If you can not identify allergens or triggers yourself your doctor will be able to help.
  • The most important step is to avoid exposure to environments and conditions that could trigger an attack.
  • Always carry medications that are necessary in the event of an attack.
  • Follow a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, ensuring that is well balanced, so as to strengthen and boost the immune system.
  • Strengthen the lungs and respiratory system with breath exercises and techniques. Yoga would be the most appropriate discipline as it addresses all your physical and psychological needs. Its attention to breath helps strengthen the lungs, while meditation and other activities help control stress.
  • In addition to the mentioned tips you can also try out more specific remedies on a regular basis, such as aromatherapy massages, steam inhalation with aroma oils, and hot soaks.

It would also make sense to consult experts in natural medicine, aromatherapy, herbal medicine or any other discipline for further advice and guidance, but never try out any alternative medications without first consulting your doctor.
