Chronic urticaria is also referred to as chronic hives. Urticaria is characterized by groups of raised, red or white itchy wheals that appear every now and then. Chronic utricaria is said to occur when it lasts for more than 6 weeks or when the condition goes away within a week, but appears with alarming regularity and frequency.

In most cases of hives or urticaria the exact or definite cause cannot be found out, and therefore urticaria is referred to as an auto-immune disorder. Since the underlying cause of urticaria is unidentifiable, treatment is based on relieving the symptoms, rather than curing the disorder itself.

Since hives is an auto-immune condition, certain home remedies prove effective in alleviating the extremely itchy sensation as well as the swelling brought about by this condition.

  • When urticaria is accompanied by digestive disorders you can get relief by drinking warm water to which 10 grams of salt has been added. Gargle with this mixture so as to induce vomit. This remedy helps in reducing the occurrence and size of eruptions.
  • A mixture made out of red ochre and alum is also very effective in treating urticaria. Take these two powders and mix them up thoroughly. Apply this powder on the welts in circular motions to experience relief from the itchy sensation.
  • You can also use rose water and apple cider vinegar to obtain effective relief from the itchiness caused by this condition. Mix about 20 ml of apple cider vinegar in about 30ml of rose water and apply this solution topically on the affected patches of your skin. This remedy should bring you instant relief. Rose water soothes the skin, while apple cinder vinegar has effective anti bacterial properties.
  • You can also make a solution by boiling 10 grams of mint leaves and 20 gm brown sugar in about 170 ml of water. Bring this mixture to a boil and drink it once it cools down but is still warm.
  • You can also drink a solution made out of turmeric powder and water. Add a teaspoon of turmeric powder to a glass of water and drink this solution daily. Turmeric has effective anti bacterial qualities that help boost the immune system.
  • Epsom salt bath is a widely recommended remedy when it comes to treating hives. For this purpose you should mix about 1 kg of Epsom salt in a hot water bath tub and soak it in for around 15 minutes. Do not use soap while having an Epsom salt bath, as the soap renders the treatment ineffective.
  • Avoid exposing your body to cold weathers or cold compresses while experiencing chronic urticaria, as this could worsen your condition.

Please visit your doctor if your conditions do not improve within a week’s time from starting treatment.
