Osteoporosis Bones

What is osteoporosis
( 8 Sep 2009)

Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones of the body become brittle and weak. Osteoporosis is also called porous bones. As the name suggest, osteoporosis causes the bones of the body to become porous and brittle.

A person experiencing this condition can suffer form bone fractures while doing the most normal day to day activities like lifting an office bag, personal notebook or even while bending over to lift a basketball ball. A deficiency of important minerals like calcium, iron and phosphorus are major factors due to which a person’s bones may become porous and brittle. Since the cause of osteoporosis is a deficiency of important minerals, it can be prevented or treated by following a balanced diet along with a healthy lifestyle. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure, it is better to prevent this painful condition, than to cure it. This is because you may not be able to experience this condition when it just starts, as bone loss is gradual. However, if you experience constant and severe backaches, or have a fractured vertebra, if you have developed a stooped posture over a period of time and are prone to fractures on your wrist, hips and other important joints of the body, the chances of you experiencing osteoporosis are quite high.

Ways to Prevent Osteoporosis:
The most effective way of preventing this condition is by consuming a well balanced diet and exercising regularly. Calcium, phosphorus, iron and other minerals are vital for bone development and remodeling. The body keeps remodeling its bones in order to grow fully. However, in the absence of calcium and other minerals this process of bone turnover is left undone. Another important vitamin that is important for preventing osteoporosis is vitamin D. In the absence of vitamin D the body is unable to absorb calcium; therefore, it is important to consume a diet that is rich in calcium and vitamin D. The sun is the best source of vitamin D. Taking walks early in the morning at sunrise ensures that the body receives its fair share of vitamin D.

Home remedies useful in treating Osteoporosis:

  • A person suffering form this condition should consume food rich in calcium, phosphorous and iron. Including milk and milk products in ones diet is the best way of gaining calcium. Green vegetables are rich in these minerals too. Boron is an important mineral that helps the body retain calcium; therefore, you should also consume foods rich in boron content. Boron is found in fruits like apples, grapes and pears. It can also be obtained from pulses and legumes.
  • Exercising regularly also makes sure that bone strength and density is maintained. A person suffering from osteoporosis is advised to walk around in a swimming pool, as the water helps to distribute body weight, thus reducing the risk of fractures.
