Bad breath or halitosis, as referred to medically, is not an uncommon condition, and is not unheard of even among those who do practice strict oral hygiene. The problem in some cases may also be that although a lot of attention is paid to oral hygiene it is not appropriate. As you have mentioned brushing your teeth twice a day it would make sense to point out that this alone does not suffice for oral hygiene.
Besides oral hygiene however, there are many other factors that could also come in to play and may be contributing to, or causing the problem.
Dietary factors are another very common cause for bad breath. Diets that comprise largely of meats and dairy products are more likely to contribute to such a problem.
Dryness of the mouth, gum disease or tooth decay, sinus infections or digestive problems and a number of other factors could cause bad breath. Smoking and consumption of alcohol can also contribute to the problem. Although bad breath is not a serious health concern, if not caused by a disease, it can be extremely embarrassing in a social context. If caused as a symptom of some other disease, then there is little you can do about it, other than to treat the disease.
Fortunately treatment of halitosis is quite simple and in most cases, simply identifying the cause can make it a lot simpler. If dietary habits are responsible for the condition then it would be best to cut down on odor producing foods. It would also help to quite smoking and cut down on alcohol consumption. Oral hygiene is of course the simplest and most effective natural cure for bad breath. To maintain the highest levels of oral hygiene you not only need to brush your teeth following a meal, but should also floss between the teeth and most importantly cleanse your tongue by gently scraping it with your brush. Visiting your dentist regularly would also be necessary.
Unfortunately, despite the best oral hygiene halitosis may at times still be a problem. Bad breath is caused because of the accumulation of particular bacteria in the mouth that produce the odor responsible. Home remedies can however help counter the problem:
- Baking soda is quite popular as a home remedy and can be used to treat halitosis.
- Making a mixture of water and hydrogen peroxide in equal amounts and using it as a mouthwash can also help address the problem.
