Headaches have come to be an accepted feature of our modern lifestyle and there are none among us who do not experience them occasionally at least. Stress headaches are possibly the most common of all and the increasing frequency and incidence of headaches can be attributed to our fast paced and hectic lifestyles. In addition to the fact that our lifestyle is problematic and a cause for a variety of stress disorders, most of us tend to neglect the warning signs and rely on other modern devices to balance it out only aggravating the problem.

Popping pills for headaches for that matter has become the unhealthy norm.

Reliance or rather over reliance on medications for common and recurring conditions is unhealthy and can have severe long term consequences. Apart from the reactions caused by such medications, the resultant neglect of the underlying cause of the problem can also be disastrous.

For an effective cure it is necessary to address the underlying cause, rather than simply relieve the symptoms. There is a lot more interest in natural treatment and self care practices to treat headaches today, as more people are aware of the dangers of prolonged usage of pharmaceuticals. There are plenty of natural therapies and remedies for headaches that are extremely effective.

Relaxation techniques are the best bet for stress headaches and could include a variety of approaches from breath exercises to aromatherapy and massage therapy. All of them work to relieve the throbbing pain, by releasing the tension responsible. Aromatherapy can be administered using diffusers or in baths and soaks, or even in massages. As far as massages go it would be best to focus on the neck, forehead, and shoulders in particular.

Aromatherapy treatments are of particular value as they are extremely relaxing and luxurious. Nothing feels better than pampering yourself to a soak in a warm tub with some aroma oils added in. Lavender and lemon oil are particularly useful for this treatment. Herbal remedies are also very effective but you need to exercise caution when using herbal treatments as some can be toxic if above the required dosage. Feverfew is one such herb that helps treat headaches.

Headaches can at times however be indicative of other health conditions that may be more serious and warrant medical treatment. If you suffer from frequent or persistent headaches therefore, it would make sense to get a medical diagnosis as soon as possible.
