Bad breath or unpleasant mouth odor is one of the most common conditions that all of us have experienced or suffered at some point of time. It is in fact referred to medically as halitosis.  The condition is caused due to the presence of odor producing bacteria in the mouth.

There are a variety of factors that contribute to the problem and these may also determine the nature of the problem in the context of whether temporary and recurring or constant. Very commonly unpleasant mouth odor is simply the result of dietary habits, or rather the consumption of certain foods like onion and garlic. Poor oral hygiene and carelessness when brushing or cleansing the teeth also results in food residue remaining in the mouth and the accumulation of bacteria in crevices of the teeth and gums as well as on the tongue.

Dental decay and gum diseases or certain illnesses like throat infections or constipation can also contribute to bad breath.

Halitosis is a simple condition that is not very serious and is just as simple to treat. The only implications of the condition are the social interactions, wherein the condition can be an embarrassment and cause awkwardness or withdrawal in the affected. There are plenty of natural remedies that can help relieve the symptoms and even cure the condition. The most important step is the maintenance of oral hygiene. Brushing your teeth well is absolutely vital and should be done at least twice a day; preferably before going to bed and on awaking. This alone is however inadequate and you should also cleanse your tongue regularly, a fact that most people neglect. This will help get rid of bacteria and accumulating debris on the surface. In addition it would make sense to begin your day with a healthy breakfast with fibrous fruits that provide adequate roughage as this helps clean the back portion of your tongue. Dryness of the mouth being a major contributing factor to halitosis it is also necessary to consume adequate water and fluids to keep your system hydrated. Gargling with a mouthwash or warm saline water is also another effective remedy for the problem. Try to eat raw green guavas and chew on some green cardamom after meals as this will help control odor. It would also be wise to cut down on odor causing foods like onions and garlic if you do consume large amounts normally.
