What are the home remedies in treating halitosis

Halitosis or bad breath is a condition that we are all only too familiar with, and is generally a temporary and minor condition. Poor oral hygiene may be the cause that most are familiar with, but it can also be induced due to other factors like oral dryness, hunger, stress, smoking and the consumption of specific foods or certain types of foods like onions or garlic.

Although the condition in itself is not dangerous, threatening or any cause for real worry, it can be extremely damaging psychologically because of the social connotations.


The condition can be an embarrassment and create awkwardness in social interactions and any social settings. Even if the affected person is not perturbed by the problem it would be a source of discomfort to those around. Fortunately the condition can be remedied quite easily, with some good oral hygiene and natural remedies.

Before you delve on the remedies and understand their importance it would be necessary for you to understand how the problem emerges. Bacteria exist in our mouths and under normal circumstances when this population is limited they are not a cause for concern. Increase in the presence of bacteria can however result in unpleasant odor, and this tends to happen when oral hygiene is not given adequate importance.  

As with most other ailments the most effective method of treatment would be to adopt preventive strategies that would include a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle habits. This would be absolutely necessary for any successful treatment. Here are some self care tips that you need to keep in mind:
Always make sure that you clean your teeth after meals and remember to floss as well. Do not be careless and lazy when doing this as even areas of the teeth that are hard to get at should not be neglected.
Cleansing of the tongue is another important routine that should never be neglected. This will help prevent bacterial growth which is normally very prominent along the tongue.  

Here are some home remedies that can help along with the self care and oral hygiene tips:
  • Natural ingredients like peppermint and spearmint can work wonders and the leaves may simply
  • Downing a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar before meals is also said to be helpful.
  • Doing a warm salt water gargle, first thing each morning’ can also help to some extent.
  • Herbal teas like chamomile can also prove to be quite help against halitosis.
