Your son is most likely facing a bout of constipation. Constipation is not an uncommon condition among children, or even adults for that matter. In fact constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal problems faced by children.

There is more than one factor that leads to this condition in children; these factors range from dietary habits to lifestyle changes. In certain cases, environmental changes can also cause a child to experience constipation. Constipation is not a very serious health problem if treated in time.

However, it could be quite painful and irritating at times. A visit to your local family doctor will help you rule out any complications or other underlying conditions that could cause constipation.

If your child displays some, or more than one of the following symptoms it is highly possible that he is experiencing constipation: poor appetite along with the absence of bowel movements for several days, passing stools less than four times in a week or difficulty and pain while passing stools. In addition to these symptoms of constipation, there are also secondary symptoms such as lower abdominal pain, a feeling of nausea  or hard stools that may contain a little blood. The most common causes of this condition among children are:
  • Slow movement of waste from the colon to the rectum.
  • Purposeful withholding of stool due to embarrassment – this is common in school children who do not wish to use the school toilets
  • A change in place, atmosphere, diet and lifestyle can also cause a child to get constipated.
  • Milk allergies and certain medications

You can treat your son’s condition effectively by:

  • Ensure that your son consumes food rich in fiber content. Fiber helps in transporting body waste from the colon to the rectum, thus making sure that the passage of stools is smooth and hassle free.
  • Encourage your son to drink plenty of water. The colon absorbs water from the waste that passes through it, thus making it hard. Therefore, if there is very little supply of water in the stool it could become too dry and hard. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day keeps the body hydrated. It is best if your son starts his day with a glass of water to which one table spoon of honey or lemon juice has been added. He should drink this mixture on an empty stomach for effective results.
  • Eating fiber rich fruits like apples, bananas, grapes and water melon will also help your son get rid of his condition effectively.

It would also help if your son stays off fried and junk food for a week, as fried and oily junk food cannot be digested easily by the stomach.
