Sleeplessness or the inability to fall asleep is a medical condition referred to as insomnia. Sleep as a periodic state of rest and deep relaxation is essential for the body and mind to function efficiently. It provides relief from stress and tension and also allows the muscles to relax.
Sleep requirements may vary from individual with the average requirements being around seven to eight hours each night. Insomnia or sleep deprivation robs the individual of this much needed rest and therefore begins to affect day to day activities. As sleep is essential for rest and recuperation daily tasks start to suffer and the problem therefore takes a toll on every aspect of life from work to social relationships and physical health.
Insomnia is one of the most common disorders among the affluent and those in an urban environment. This is probably because it is largely a stress related disorder and the modern urban environment is a high stress zone. Working conditions are grueling with intense pressure, whether an employee or self employed. The obsession with economic and social status and monetary gains can also become overbearing driving individuals to unachievable goals and unimaginable stress. If there is no cause for insomnia other than stress then the only effective long term solution is to take measures to reduce stress and instead aim towards relaxation.
Most of us unfortunately can’t pack up and move to the country and we have to cope with the demands placed on us and our own desires. To achieve this with minimal health consequences we need to adopt time management and stress management plans that give us adequate time to relax and de-stress. Without adequate relaxation we would not be able to cope with and would soon buckle under the intense stress. Insomnia should be treated seriously as it has the power to alter your life and consequentially your personality over time if not dealt with appropriately.
Relaxation techniques and insomnia remedies can work as the best combination to help overcome your problem. Follow a disciplined routine with enough time reserved solely for your self. Time in which you can relax pursuing your own hobbies or simply being lazy and doing things you love. The point is to relax. Exercises, disciplines like yoga and meditation, breath exercises, and even a warm soak in a tub with some aroma oils added could help give you a relaxing and luxurious experience. Such a state of relaxation helps induce sleep.
In addition to these strategies there are also other disciplines that can help like herbal medicine. Herbs like valerian in fact work as natural sedatives.
