Bladder infections are not horribly uncommon and fall into the category of urinary tract infections. Bladder infections are also often referred to as cystitis. Sometimes bacteria get into the urinary tract via the urethra and manage to make their way up in to the bladder.
If the bacteria multiply in the bladder it can cause an infection. A bladder infection is highly discomforting and painful, but is not very hard to treat and in most cases is cause by the Escherichia coli bacteria.
Bladder infections are mostly spread because of the proximity of the rectal area enabling the bacteria to travel.
Some of the symptoms that are typical of a bladder infection would include the frequent and seemingly constant need to urinate. Not only is this annoying but to make it worse urination can be extremely painful or there could be a burning sensation. Patients also experience bladder spasms, cloudy and foul smelling urine, and pain in the lower back, above the pubic bone or abdomen, fatigue, exhaustion and possibly even a mild fever.
Treatment of bladder infections can help to minimize and relieve the symptoms and may include complimentary therapy or natural remedies, while preventive measures can also help. Natural treatment is in fact preferred by many patients as it allows them to avoid the reactions and problems that stem from use of OTC drugs or antibiotics.
Herbal medicine has come to be quite valuable in the treatment of urinary infections and certain herbs can encourage urination, helping flush out harmful bacteria from the system. One such herb is the upland cranberry or bearberry that in herbal medicine is more commonly known as uva ursi. Simply use the leaves either as a tincture or for a tea preparation. Make sure that you consult your doctor or an herbalist before using this remedy however as it can be very toxic and should therefore only be had in small doses. Echinacea and goldenseal are two more herbs that are commonly as they boost the immune system and also display an antibiotic effect. These can again be had as a tincture or even in capsule form.
There are a number of other herbs that are helpful like marshmallow root, alfalfa, celery, yarrow and juniper berries. In addition to such treatments it is also important that you follow a healthy well balanced diet and drink a lot of water, while avoiding carbonated juices and alcohol. Other branches of natural medicine that can help and are often employed as complimentary therapy include acupuncture, naturopathy, massages and nutritional therapy.
