Multiple scelrosis is a disease of the nervous system that can be debilitating and affect the brain and spinal cord. Unde this condition the immune system which normally protects your body turns on the protective layering of the nerves, thus damaging and affecting the communication and sending of messages between the brain and various other body parts. This disruption of communication is what is responsible for the symptoms we associate with multiple sclerosis.
The action or progression of the disease can lead to nerve damage, which can not be reversed.
In severe cases patients may lose the ability to walk or even to speak. Unfortunately the condition is not very easy to diagnose because of the sporadic nature of the appearance and disappearance of the symptoms for even months at a time.
The common symptoms however generally include:
- Weakening or loss of coordination and balance
- Numbness, or prickling sensations
- Memory loss and problems with thought
The exact causes of multiple sclerosis are still not understood and it is thought that it could be an autoimmune disease. Although the condition can affect people of any age group it is more prevalent among those aged 20 – 40 and more among women. Sadly, there is no known cure for multiple sclerosis but medical treatment can help control and even delay the progression of the disease. Natural methods and treatments can also help significantly as a compliment to conventional treatment. Physical and occupational therapy are believed to be of use.
Here are some natural treatment practices that can be followed to relieve the symptoms:
- Fatigue being a prominent symptom of multiple sclerosis it is important that you get adequate rest to avoid feeling less tired.
- Physical activity is another requirement for patients and it would be a good idea to engage in some regular light aerobic exercises. It can help with improved strength and very importantly with balance and coordination. Muscle loss can also be combated with exercise. Yoga is possibly the best discipline for patients of multiple sclerosis as it focuses on strengthening, improving stamina, and building coordination, balance, focus and concentration.
- Exposure to heat can cause muscle weakness and can be particularly bothersome for some patients. Showering frequently or taking up activities like swimming can help deal with this problem.
- Many researchers have suggested that the condition can be controlled to some extent through dietary methods. Getting a personalized diet from a nutritionist may therefore be a good idea. In the absence of this however it would make sense to at least stick to a wholesome and well balanced diet plan.
