Chronic constipation, seemingly slow digestion, and the bloated sensation all go hand in hand and are unlikely to be resolved until the actual underlying cause of the digestive problem is addressed. In almost all cases this cause can be attributed to unhealthy diet habits and a poor or rather sedentary lifestyle. It therefore logically follows that the most effective long term solution would be to make necessary dietary and lifestyle changes.

Constipation can be defined as the infrequent passage of stools or the inability to evacuate the bowels on a frequent basis. Hardening of stools to the point that evacuating the bowels would be painful is also common. Severe or chronic constipation is not just disturbing because of the discomfort of it’s associated symptoms and the pain, but also because it can cause the development of conditions that are a lot more serious like piles, anal fissures, fecal impaction and even increase the risk of colorectal cancer.

Chronic constipation is also worrying because it is a constant or regular feature and not a one of incident of constipation. This means that the diet and lifestyle pattern is constantly unhealthy and the condition is a warning sign for future problems. Chronic constipation can not be addressed with laxatives and enemas as it is regular problem and frequent or recurrent usage of laxatives can create a reliance or dependence, causing what is termed ‘lazy colon’. For this reason chronic constipation is best treated with natural methods. Using natural laxatives and natural remedies however does not suffice as for a long term solution dietary changes are the necessity.

It would be advisable that you switch to a diet with a high fiber intake, while low in saturated fats and refined foods. There are many dietary recommendations that you would need to follow and it would be best that you consult your doctor and a nutritionist for the appropriate diet plan. In the meantime here are some remedies that can offer temporary relief to alleviate the constipation and associated symptoms.
  • Boost your fluid consumption as it would be important to keep your system well hydrated. Inadequate fluid intake can exacerbate and even cause severe constipation.
  • Consume figs each morning that have been soaked for the night. Also consume the water in which you soaked them.
  • Strained or whole prunes can also help cure constipation.
  • Each morning prepare a glass of warm water; add the juice of a single lemon to it, and drink this.
  • Apple cider vinegar is useful in a number of situations and can again be brought to good use. Simply add a teaspoon of both apple cider vinegar and honey to a glass of water and drink it.

Keep in mind that in addition to dietary modifications physical activity is also necessary as a sedentary lifestyle does not bode well for your digestive system.
