Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection that is contagious and affects the area between the toes and the feet. It is caused due to parasitic fungi from the group termed as dermatophytes, which are also responsible for a number of other common infections. Ringworm, jock itch, and toenail fungus are in fact all caused by this same group of fungi.
Medically the condition is referred to as tinea pedis and it is particularly common among athletes because of the very nature of the infection, which is why it takes its name. Of course the infection is not restricted to athletes, but can affect anyone exposed to the right conditions.
Athlete’s foot is easily communicable and as with all other fungi the fungi responsible for the infection thrives in moist and warm environments, as in gyms, showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools.
Individuals who frequent such places are therefore at greater risk, but there’s a lot that can be done to protect against infection. Walking around bare foot in such a risky environment only increases your risk and it would also be unwise to share foot wear and other personal items. Maintaining the strictest personal hygiene and keeping your feet dry and clean and only clad in clean and dry sock and shoes can help avert infection. These preventive measures are also necessary whilst combating infection so as to prevent its spread and also to prevent re-infection.
Personal hygiene and preventive action is therefore the first line of defense against fungal infections like athlete’s foot. In addition to preventive practices there are also quite a few remedies that could help you treat the infection. Keep in mind however that the effectiveness of these remedies may vary from individual to individual and many have not been verified in a scientific environment. If the treatments do not show any result make it a point to consult a doctor swiftly as delaying treatment will only make the infection a lot harder to treat.
Here are some popular natural remedies for athlete’s foot:
- You can try soaking your foot in a solution of warm water and vinegar in the proportions of 1:4, with one part being vinegar. Do this at least twice a day.
- A baking soda paste with water can also be applied as treatment over the affected area.
- Essential oils like tea tree oil have strong anti fungal properties and can also be used as treatment.
- Antifungal powders that are available over the counter are also useful against the infection.
