A strep throat infection is basically a sore throat, but it is not just any sore throat causing infection, rather one that is cause by a bacteria. Most sore throats caused by infection are viral and resolve naturally, without any intervention, while just a small percentage is caused by bacteria. A strep throat infection shouldn’t be left untreated as if it is persistent can lead to complications like rheumatic fever and kidney inflammation.
The infection is more common among children and young adolescents but can affect anyone.
A strep throat is not a serious illness but it can be very discomforting and painful. If neglected however it may pose a risk.
A strep throat infection causes severe throat pain, particularly when swallowing food; it may even be painful to swallow your own saliva. The tonsils may also appear to be swollen and both the tonsils and palate may appear to have reddened or red spots, while you may also experience other symptoms like headaches, fever, rashes, stomachaches, and even tenderness and swelling of the lymph glands in the neck.
There are many who prefer to avoid the use of antibiotics because of the possible reactions and also so as to avoid long term usage and reliance on antibiotics for common mundane illnesses like these. Keep in mind however that if the infection does not respond to natural treatments in a few days it would be necessary to get antibiotic treatment as a strep infection is bacterial and may require medication. Natural remedies could however work and are worth a try because they have been found to be effective in many situations. They can work by strengthening your immune system, enabling your body to fight of the bacteria naturally.
- The first requirement is that you get adequate rest and do not over exert yourself as your body needs to recuperate so that it can fight off the infection.
- Due to the pain of swallowing there may be a tendency to drink a lot less water and there could be a decrease in overall liquid and solid food intake. Dehydration is therefore a valid cause for concern and can be prevented if you maintain an adequate fluid intake. Adding electrolyte solutions to your diet will also help avert dehydration.
- Consume soft foods that are easier to swallow like broths, soups, mashed potatoes, yogurt and well cooked vegetables or soft fruits. Do not eat any acidic or spicy foods as they will only add to the irritation.
- If your room has artificial cooling or heating or if the weather itself is extremely dry it would help to use a humidifier. This will help minimize the effects of drying and irritation of the throat and will help moisten the mucus membranes.
- Warm salt water gargles are the best remedy and can be done twice or thrice a day.
