Multiple sclerosis is serious disorder because it is potentially debilitating as the affected individual’s immune system acts destructively against the protective sheath over the nerves. This affects the communication process between your brain and various body parts, as signals or transmissions are sent via the nerves. The condition can even lead ultimately to a progressive deterioration of the nerves, which is irreversible.
The symptoms of the condition would vary greatly depending on the extent of the damage to the nerves and also depending on which nerves are affected. In very severe cases the extent of nerve damage can be so far reaching, so as to leave the person unable to walk or speak.
The condition can be hard to diagnose in the early stages as the symptoms often appear and disappear, sometimes not surfacing even for months.
The condition can affect individuals of any age but generally tends to affect those around the age of 20 to 40, with women being more susceptible than men.
There are a number of natural treatments that are believed to offer some hope to patients of multiple sclerosis and some may be included as complimentary therapy, while there are also alternative therapies. Some of these natural treatments would include acupuncture, homeopathy and massage. Complimentary treatment or the use of natural methods in combination with medical treatment can help significantly but reliance solely on natural treatment is not recommended. Before beginning any natural treatment it would also be necessary to consult your doctor and inform him about your decision. Make your choices based upon his advice. Some herbal remedies that are frequently prescribed include Lavendula angustifolia, Avena sativa, and Melissa officinalis, St John’s Wort, and Passiflora incarnate. Herbs are used to help with secondary problems like constipation, bladder problems, and general inflammation.
Lifestyle changes are of course the most important aspect of natural treatment.
- Fatigue being one of the common symptoms of the condition it is important to get adequate rest.
- In cases o f mild to moderate multiple sclerosis simple aerobic exercise can offer significant benefits, strengthening and toning muscles, and helping to improve balance and coordination. This can also help avert depression. Swimming is another excellent activity that can also help beat the heat.
- Exposure to extreme heat can have unforeseen consequences at times and cause severe muscle weakness. It is therefore advisable to avoid getting into a hot sauna or tub, unless someone is present to help in case of an emergency.
- Heat related worsening of symptoms is not uncommon, so if living in a warm humid area, installing an air conditioner would be advisable.
- A well balanced wholesome and nutritious diet is also strongly recommended.
