Low blood pressure is also medically known as hypotension and is the opposite of hypertension. Low blood pressure or hypotension is characterized by a decrease in the flow of blood. This decrease in the flow of blood leads to a lack of oxygen and nutrient supply in various parts of the body.

The pressure at which blood flows differs from person to person; however, a person whose blood flows at less than 90 millimeters of mercury systolic blood pressure and less than 60 millimeters diastolic blood pressure is considered to have low blood pressure or hypotension.

Low blood pressure is treatable provided it is diagnosed. Therefore, it is imperative that you visit a doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms: Breathlessness caused by shallow and rapid breathing, light headedness or dizziness, fatigue, constant feeling of thirst, blurred vision, nausea, a feeling of constant depression, the inability to concentrate or focus, and fainting spells.

In many cases hypotension or low blood pressure are not considered serious, and could simply be a result of dehydration from being the heat for too long. However, it is important to get yourself examined as low blood pressure can lead to various other health conditions.

Some of the causes as to why a person may experience low blood pressure are:

  • Pregnancy is one of the causes of hypotension. During pregnancy a woman’s circulatory system expands rapidly in order to accommodate the growing fetus. This causes her blood pressure to dip sometimes. This is a temporary condition and the blood pressure tends to return to normalcy after delivery.
  • Endocrine problems like hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism can also cause hypotension. Other related conditions like addison’s disease, hypoglycemia and diabetes can also cause hypotension or low blood pressure.
  • Severe dehydration can also cause low blood pressure. When the body is dehydrated its water level dips. This causes the blood to be circulated at a slower rate, which translates into the lack of oxygen supply to the tissues and important organs. This is a more serious kind of dehydration and leads to hypovolemic shock.
  • The loss of blood due to an accident, or due to internal injuries can also cause low blood pressure. This is because the body loses excessive amounts of blood resulting in reduced amount of blood circulation in the body.
  • Anemia is a health condition in which the body is unable to produce red blood cells. This reduced production of red blood cells causes’ hypotension. Anemia is brought about due to a deficiency of folic acid and vitamin B 12 in the diet. Therefore, make sure you consume a wholesome diet in order to live a healthier life.
There are various other causes for low blood pressure. Therefore, a visit to a doctor when suffering from hypotension is imperative, as only a doctor will be able to diagnose the exact cause of your condition and provide specific treatment for the same.
