Lecithin is a phospholipid produced by the liver, comprising of linoleic acid, inositol, phosphoric acid, B vitamins and choline. It is also found in animal foods such as, pork, lamb, beef and liver and in plant foods like wheat, egg and soya. It is the most vital component in maintaining the framework of the cell membranes and lipolysis of fats.
It also forms a part of the sheath surrounding the brain, thereby improving brain function. Lecithin is available commercially as tablets, gels and granules. Over dosage results in vomitting or diarrhoea and is therefore, recommended under the guidance of a physician.
