Piles can be quite a scary condition because of the excruciating pain for some patients. The threat of surgery can be even more terrifying for many irrespective of age, but more so for those in their fifties and older because of the fear of complications. Medical practitioners however take these risks into account before prescribing any action plan, so although your fears are not unfounded you can put them to rest.

More importantly piles does not require surgery in most cases, so you can breathe a sigh of relief. If the recommendation for surgery was from your health care provider and you are apprehensive then it would make sense to get a second opinion. Surgery is only required in rare and very severe cases.

In most cases piles can be treated with simple home remedies and dietary and lifestyle modifications. Piles, as you may be aware, is a condition in which the veins located around the anus and lower rectum get inflamed and swollen due to excessive pressure on them. This can occur as a result of severe pressure due to chronic or severe constipation, due to physiological changes resulting in pressure such as pregnancy or obesity, or also due to certain other ailments. Although there are quite a few possible causes a faulty diet that leads to chronic or frequent constipation is the most common and widespread cause. Neglecting the problem and treating it merely with temporary measures such as laxatives and ointments can only prolong the condition, leading to its progressive worsening as these treatments only address the symptoms, not the cause. For an effective long term solution and to eliminate the risk of recurrence and complications treatment needs to be multi-pronged with medications or remedies for the symptoms and dietary and lifestyle changes to eliminate the causes.

Here are some remedies that can give some quick relief, but make sure you consult a nutritionist or dietician as well for a long term diet plan.
  • Radish juice can be used as an effective remedy for piles. Start by simply drinking a quarter cup of the juice twice a day – morning and night, and gradually increase it to half a cup.
  • You can also prepare a concoction with black cumin seeds, powdering a teaspoon of them roasted and another unroasted. Mix half a teaspoon of the powdered mix with a glass of water and drink this once a day.
  • Some dietary sources or foods that work like natural laxatives include figs, apricots, and plums. Including these in your diet will also help considerably.
