Irritation in the tooth nerve, as a result of decay, infection or injury results in a toothache. The cause of the pain and severity of damage is an essential factor to be considered before going in for drugs. Over-the-counter drugs such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen are adviced after guidance from your dentist.
The former is not adviced for children. Clove oil is an instant remedy at hand. Avoid too cold or too hot foods, as they intensify the pain.
