Of course, each person is different--but NIDDM can be managed through diet and exercise. It is important you choose low glycemic index foods (such as dark leafy green vegetables, protein (as long as your kidney function is sufficient), low glycemic index fruits, etc.) Supplements such as chromium and gymnema can support your dietary changes. Glycemic index is the speed at which the food converts to sugar in the body. There are many books available on this subject. Consult a nutritionist or trained health care professional if you need more help in planning your diet. Also, get active outdoors --walk and find aerobic exercise you enjoy. Aim for at least 30 minutes of activity each day. Get a pedometer, and set some goals. 10,000 steps daily will go a long way to helping your metabolism normalize blood sugars. Let your prescribing physician know what is happening, there are several types of medications, and some work better than others for certain people. http://www.countrydoc.com Dr. Karen Benton, Naturopathic Physician
