Gallstones occur when cholesterol, bilirubin or calcium salts solidify and become crystalline “stones”. Gallstones are generally made up of cholesterol and are either green or yellowish white in color. Gallstones can be extremely painful and the discomfort is often most acute after a meal that has a high fat content.
The main causes for gallstones are excess body weight, gallbladder motility and diet. A sedentary lifestyle is thought to contribute towards the formation of these stones.
If there are several stones and your doctor feels that you require severe medication, it would be wise to do so.
However, since your gallstones are small, you can discuss these natural remedies with your doctor and incorporate them in your daily routine as advised.
There are several home remedies for gallstones that you can use. Two herbs that are invaluable are milk thistle and dandelion. Snip and brew these herbs as a tea and drink them unsweetened while the tea is still warm. When using milk thistle, make sure that you trim the edges that are sharp. Both these herbs contain compounds that stimulate bile production. If there is an increased amount of bile, the sheer volume of it will help to flush out the stone. In addition to this, an increase in the amount of bile produced dilutes the bile and automatically decreases its concentration.
In addition to this, if you are experiencing any pain or discomfort, you can include rosemary or wild yam in your diet. Both these antispasmodic herbs help to eliminate spasms in the bile duct. Since the pain experienced by a person suffering from gallstones is caused by these spasms, you should use these remedies daily to reduce and eliminate any discomfort. You can have a tea made out of an infusion of these herbs as soon as you wake up in the morning to ensure that you are pain-free for the rest of the day. Many people experience these pains in the night after their last meal. Since this can interfere with your sleep patterns, you can have a cup just before you go to bed for uninterrupted sleep.
It is advisable to make herbal tea just before consumption and to brew a new cup each time. This is because many of the compounds in these teas start to degrade once they are exposed to air. You should also make sure that you wash these herbs well especially if you are using the root of a plant, as in the case of dandelion roots.
