Mouth ulcers can include any open sores in the mouth that cause a sharp pain when eating. These ulcers are usually a white or yellowish color and generally form on the tongue, on the inner walls of the cheeks, on the palate, lower gum area, and even on the lips. Mouth ulcers are extremely painful and can be particularly so when they come in contact with foods that are spicy, salty, hot or alcohol.

Mouth ulcers can be caused due to a variety of factors including digestive disorders like constipation, indigestion, due to poor dietary habits, as a result of hormonal problems and fluctuations, heredity, emotional stress and worry, irritants like alcohol, tobacco, certain chemicals, infections, anemia, and puberty. The most common cause however is due to mechanical injury, as is the case when you bite your cheek accidently while eating. In most cases such ulcers are harmless and they heal naturally with a few days.

There is therefore no need for medical treatment and any treatment provided would be symptomatic. There are howver some types of mouth ulcers called aphthous ulcers. These are recurring ulcerations that afflict a large percentage of our population and may require the advice of a doctor. Mouth ulcers that are caused as a symptom of a herpes simplex infection would also require medical attention.

If you suffer from frequent mouth ulcer attacks or the ulcers do not heal with a few days then make sure you consult your doctor. In other cases there are plenty of natural remedies and cautionary practices that can help provide some relief and minimize any risk of complications:
  • Make sure that you avoid consuming any foods that are spicy or sour until the ulcers have healed completely.
  • Keep your system well hydrated with a good intake of fluids.
  • Rinsing your mouth with warm water, with a dash of salt added in can help with the healing process.
  • Oral hygiene is important, so make sure you keep your mouth clean.
  • Antiseptic gels for mouth ulcers are easily available over the counter and can be applied onto the ulcers.
  • It would also be better to use a medicated mouthwash than a regular commercial one.
  • If the ulcers are caused by another infection, as a symptom, then the treatment would have to be aimed at the cause. For example; if caused by the herpes simplex virus treatment would require antiviral medications, while if the cause were oral thrush your would need anti-fungal medications.
