Asthma is a chronic condition that afflicts the respiratory tracts, causing an inflammation and consequent narrowing of these airways or bronchi. This affects the flow of air to the lungs and can severely disrupt breathing. This is one of the most troubling of all respiratory diseases as it can be quite debilitating and in severe cases it can even be fatal.
Childhood asthma has also become increasingly common and can severely disrupt your daily activities. Asthma sufferers suffer what are called asthma attacks, which are triggered by irritants (mostly airborne), as the airways are extra sensitive and get further narrowed. This causes coughing spasms, wheezing, and breathlessness.
Asthma can not be cured and contrary to the claims of many there is no cure for the condition, either pharmaceutical or natural. The condition can however be controlled and restricted with the appropriate treatment. Natural remedies are extremely useful and a popular choice for many as this being a chronic condition, treatment may need to be frequent and lifelong. Most of us would rather not rely on pharmaceutical products on a long term basis as prolonged usage does pose health risks. Natural treatments for asthma like most conventional ones are primarily directed towards controlling and minimizing the symptoms. The most important aspect of treatment however is to avoid asthma attacks and this can only be achieved through avoidance of triggers.
In addition to avoidance however there are certain natural practices that can improve the health of your lungs and the respiratory passages. These remedies are however no substitute for medications required when faced with a severe asthma attack.
- Add a teaspoon of turmeric powder to a glass of milk and have this two or three times a day. It is most effective when consumed on an empty stomach.
- During a mild attack you can try massaging a mixture of camphor and mustard oil on to the chest.
- A cup of steaming ginger tea, with some minced garlic cloves added can also be consumed every morning and evening.
- Use a blender to make a mixture of lemon juice, radish and honey, after which it should be cooked in a shallow pan with low heat. Have a teaspoon of this mixture every day.
- Steam inhalation is invaluable for asthma patients and helps to clear and cleanse the airways. You can simply do a steam inhalation over boiling water, with some caraway seeds added in or an aromatherapy inhalation with oils like eucalyptus or spearmint added.
