Sunburn is the result of too much exposure to the sun or sun-equivalent exposure. The condition is literally a burn on the skin due to ultraviolet radiation. This causes an inflammation of the skin, which can begin in as little as within thirty minutes of exposure.

No matter which part of the world you live in all of us are exposed to sunlight and UV radiation at some time or the other. Consequently almost everyone has been sunburned at some time or the other or is likely to be. Those of us who live in areas with distinctive seasonal patterns are even more likely to spend a lot more time outdoors in the summer months because of the preceding harsh winter months that kept us cooped indoors.

In our excitement and summer frivolity most of us neglect to protect our skin against the effects of sun exposure. Whether you’re working in your garden or lazing at the beach the UV radiation is constantly damaging your skin. Although sunburn is usually quite mild it can cause a great deal of discomfort and increase your risk of a lot more serious skin problems.

Most cases of sunburn, being relatively mild, require no medical attention and can be treated effectively at home itself. Here are some home remedies that you can try out without the need for any commercial products:
  • Areas that are badly affected by subnburn can be draped in cool cloths or rather cloths soaked in cool water. Vinegar or apple cider vinegar can also be used instead of cool water as it’s medicinal properties are believed to soothe the skin.
  • Showering or bathing frequently in cool water will also provide great relief.
  • If you do have any aloe vera solution you can use it on the skin.
  • Cold milk is also extremely soothing and you can apply it over your body or soak in it for a while. Since the benefits derive from the natural fat in milk it would be best not to use skimmed milk varieties.
  • Baking soda is quite an effective remedy against sunburn and is widely used. You can simply add a cup of the powder to your bath water and soak in it for at least half an hour. This will offer you some quick relief and actually allow you to relax.
  • Mild headaches and fever may sometimes occur because of the sunburn and rehydration is the most important. So drink adequate fluids and get some rest in a cool and quiet room.
