The color of our skin is largely determined by heredity. Skin obtains its color from a pigment called melanin that is present in the melancoyte cells of our body. This pigment is brown in color.
However, when melanin is present in larger concentrations on a person’s skin, it makes the skin look darker in shade. Melanin protects the skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun; therefore, it plays a vital role in preventing sun burns and skin cancer. In your case too, you may not be able to get rid of a dark skin color, but you can definitely lighten it, and work towards achieving a healthy skin complexion.
You can try the following home remedies in order to attain a flawless skin complexion and a lighter skin tone.
- Avoid going out in the sun too often. The sun has many benefits and positive applications, it is responsible for helping the body synthesize vitamin D. However, the sun can be quite destructive too, due to its harmful UV rays. When the body is exposed to the sun it increases its production of melanin, in order to save itself from the harmful UV rays of the sun. This, results in what we know as a sun tan. Thus avoiding the sun as far as possible will help reduce the darkness of your skin.
- Always apply a good sun screen lotion when moving out of your home during the day. This will protect your skin from coming in contact with the sun directly and will also reduce the production of melanin in your body. Wearing full sleeved shirts and full length pants will help you achieve the same.
- Make a paste out tomato or raw potato juice, honey and turmeric. Apply this paste on your face and leave it on. After 10 minutes wash your face thoroughly. Potato or tomatos are natural bleaching agents. They help in lightening skin tone. Honey is a natural moisturizer that will make your skin feel soft. Turmeric is an anti bacterial agent with excellent skin healing properties; it will also provide your skin with an even tone.
- You can also exfoliate your skin twice a week in order to lighten your skin tone and keep it free from dead cells that may clog its pores. For this purpose you may use the juice from a freshly squeezed lemon, yogurt and turmeric powder. After mixing these three ingredients well, apply the mixture on you body. Allow it to remain on your skin for 15 minutes. Using a loofa or oat meal soaked in milk scrub your body well, so that the mixture is wiped off. Wash your body with room temperature water after this process. Lemon is a natural bleaching agent. Yogurt will help moisturize your skin and will prevent it from drying excessively due to the presence of the lemon juice. Turmeric is very effective in healing a host of skin conditions. The loofa or oats soaked in milk will help in the process of exfoliation by making sure that the dead skin cells are sloughed off effectively.
This skin care routine, if followed regularly will help you lighten your skin tone effectively.
