Remedies for earache

how to ease ear pain?
(17 Apr 2007)

Earaches are mainly the result of ear infections. Ear infections are caused by excess water getting trapped within the ear which leads to a virus or a bacterial infection festering in the middle or the external ear. When there is a blockage on either side of the Eustachian tube, the ache starts as a sign of the infection.

Water deposition can happen due to swimming or excess bathing which causes water to accumulate in the ear.
Stress of a common cold can also act as the beginnings of an ear infection which leads to an earache. Allergies, sores in the mouth, or injuries to any other sense organ can also affect the ears. The cause of ear pain in adults, children and kids can be a change of pressure or temperature or big impact on the ear. Dizziness and pressure are the symptoms of ear pain. Other symptoms include loss of appetite, irritability, fever, vertigo, difficulty in hearing, and in severe cases, even a visible fluid buildup in the ear. There is also an acute form of ear infection called the swimmers’ ear. It is caused by contracting bacterial infection after swimming.

Sometime it is not just an ear infection. Chronic ear pain is accompanied with throat pain while swallowing. The ear and throat pain on one side, on the right side, when swallowing and when yawning, all happen when the glands are also swollen. It could be an attack of tonsillitis. While there are over-the-counter remedies for it, you should consult a doctor if the condition has affected a child.

Earache and ear infection pain relief can be simple with simple earache remedies. If you feel your ear is blocked, apply a hot compress or cold one near the ear to reduce the pain. If the pain persists for a few days, then do visit a doctor. Avoid inserting anything sharp into the ear. It could lead to ear infection if you don’t already have one or could also cause irreparable damage to the ear. Some of the best earache cures include the use of home remedies. Put a few drops of garlic juice in the infected ear and lie down on that side to allow easy penetration.

Earache relief can be provided with olive oil and hydrogen peroxide. A few drops of hydrogen peroxide can give relief to ear pain and reduce the wax build up. Earache remedies for children and kids include garlic inserted with oil into the ear. Olive oil is known to help the removal of obstruction in the Eustachian tube. A few drops of holy basil juice and onion juice have been known to alleviate pain and remove the blockage. A combination of ginger and sesame oil helps remove blockages as does a poultice of chamomile. Biting soft vegetables or drinking soup also helps ear aches. Earache relief for babies and children includes a little warm oil being drizzled into the ear. Children tend to get cranky and irritable and insert sharp objects to purportedly relieve the earache. Do ensure that it is not done as such objects could cause significant damage to the ear. If your child is under six months and is cranky due to ear pain, you should consult a doctor as home remedies are not always advised for children.

Prevention of ear aches is simple enough. Take care of your sinuses when you get a cold. Do not blow your nose too vigorously. Chew gum while traveling through pressure change zone like in an airplane. Earaches can also be caused due to a drastic change in the temperature. You can use ear plug or plain swabs to protect the middle and inner ear from harm during swimming or during travel. Clean the ear canal on a regular basis. Using rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide with a cotton swab would do the trick.

Pain in the ear can be a result of inflammation of the external ear or otitis media (middle ear infection and swelling). Yawning (resulting in muscle contraction) and a hot shower are simple, cost-effective remedies!
