Dark circles are generally caused by one or more of these underlying conditions: heredity, bruising and inadequate sleep. You can treat dark circles caused by bruising or inadequate sleep. Unfortunately, if you have dark circles due to heredity, you may not be able to get rid of them completely.

The easiest way of determining the underlying cause of your condition, is by checking the amount of time you took to develop this condition. If you experience dark circles overnight, an injury around the eye could be the main reason. If you have not slept well for over a week, and have been unusually anxious, your condition could be traced back to inadequate sleep or rest. However, if your eyes have sported dark circles for years together, then in all probability is an inherited trait.

Dark circles that occur as a result of bruising usually go away once the injury heals. However, in order to speed up the process of recovery you can apply aloe vera gel or juice over the affected area, this will help soothe the affected nerves, and reduce the swelling. Make sure that you do not apply the juice into the eye and restrict the treatment to the skin around the eye. You may also apply ice cubes on the affected area, this will help reduce the swelling too.

If your dark circles are due to lack of sleep, you will have to make sure that you take proper rest. Applying slices of cucumber or crated cucumber on your eyes will help provide your eyes with the much needed relief it requires. In order to get rid of the darkened area, you can apply a paste made of milk cream, honey, cucumber juice and a pinch of turmeric. Leave this application on overnight, and wash it off completely the next morning. Aloe vera has anti bacterial properties and provides the skin with a protective coating. Milk cream and honey are known for their skin healing and skin moisturizing properties, while turmeric provides the skin with a yellowish tinge, thus lightening the darkened area. Turmeric is also widely acclaimed for its skin healing properties. The cucumber juice in the mixture will help keep the affected skin cool.

Tanned skin can be lightened effectively by using simple home remedies and preventive measures.
  • Cover your legs while going out in the sun. You can do this by wearing full length trousers or skirts.
  • If you do not like wearing trousers or full length skirts, apply a sun screen lotion instead. This will make sure that your skin does not get darkened any further. Use a water proof sun screen lotion if you are going swimming, as normal sun screen lotions become ineffective in water.
  • The skin returns back to its normal color over a period of time. However, you can help hasten this process by performing a simple yet effective treatment called exfoliation. Rub a slice of lemon over the darkened areas of your legs. Using a loofa, scrub the darkened area. Lemon is a natural bleaching agent, loofa is a natural body scrub. The acidic property will help loosen the dead skin cells, while the loofa will help slough the dead skin off. Wash your legs after using this treatment and apply aloe vera juice on it. This will help the skin on your legs retain its moisture content. Repeat this treatment twice a week till you notice an marked improvement in the color of your legs.
