The definition of constipation is not something we need to delve on but it should suffice to say that constipation implies the irregular passage of stools or painful evacuation of the bowels with hard stools. What is regarded as irregular will differ for individuals and constipation could also include symptoms such as bloating, discomfort and feelings of fullness. Constipation, although troublesome is in most cases not serious.

Persistent and chronic constipation can however pose other health risks. Severe constipation that causes straining also poses some health risks.

Constipation needs to be treated seriously in cases where it occurs frequently, or if chronic, as this could lead to complications like hemorrhoids or anal fissures, fecal impaction, rectal prolapse, or lazy bowel syndrome.

In such a scenario where constipation is frequent pharmaceutical laxatives are not really a solution, but are a temporary remedy. Ignoring the causes and simply using such laxatives to treat the problem is harmful and dangerous and can even lead to a dependence on laxatives or a condition called lazy bowel syndrome, wherein stools can not be passed without these laxatives. If the constipation is chronic or frequent therefore, any effective treatment woul require changes to diet and lifestyle and a thorough examination and elimination of possible causes. Natural laxatives are also a better option, whether dealing with chronic constipation or a one off case.

Some of the major causes of constipation include a poor fluid intake and dehydration, low fiber diet, lack of physical activity, repressing bowel movements, changes in routine or pregnancy, frequent use of laxatives, certain diseases like diabetes or diverticulosis, some medications, hormonal disturbances, loss of body salts because of diarrhea or vomiting and other factors. The most common causes are dietary and lifestyle factors. These are of course quite easily reversible if natural methods are adopted. Many of the solutions are in fact self explanatory and awareness of the causes should help take adequate preventive action.

In addition to long term dietary changes and lifestyle modifications it would also be wise to rely on natural laxatives rather than pharmaceuticals as they are free of chemicals and therefore pose little to no risk of reactions or dependence. Some such natural laxatives for constipation that you can try include:
  • The most popular and effective natural remedy would be to soak some figs overnight in cool water and consume them the following morning.  This remedy is even useful in cases of severe constipation.
  • You can also consume dates along with milk.
