Acne in itself can be extremely unsightly and the scars they leave behind are no less. Acne scars are generally caused by picking at pimples or scratching the scabs that formed when they were popped. There are several steps that you can take to ensure minimal scarring.
First of all it is important to understand how pimples form so that you can avoid future scarring.
Pimples are formed when sebum ducts in the skin get blocked. When this happens, sebum within the glands starts to accumulate and forms the telltale bump of a pimple.
At this time it is important to not prick the pimple as this can lead to scarring. Instead, apply a warm moist compress to the area. This will help to bring the pimple to a head and will allow the sebum within it to come to the top. The pimple will then automatically burst and then drain. You can use an antibacterial cream to ensure that the area does not get infected. If the pimple does not come to a head by using a compress, you can use a medicated anti-pimple cream that contains salicylic acid. This will help to dissolve the plug that is preventing the sebum from coming to the surface.
There are different types of scarring. Very often you may notice a darkening around the area of a pimple but this will disappear within a few months. This discoloration is not really scarred tissue but is actually caused by the body’s defense mechanism that causes an excess of melanin to accumulate in the area. In time, the melanin will be reabsorbed by the body and this discoloration will fade.
There is also the possibility that you have raised bumps or small depressions called ice-pick scars. The body sometimes produces collagen to repair the tissue damaged by the pimple and an excess production of collagen causes the bumps. In order to get rid of this type of scar, you will need to get rid of the excess and unnecessary skin that forms this bump. Exfoliation is the process of eliminating the uppermost layer of dead skin. You can make your own skin scrubs out of fresh lemon juice, sugar granules and a drop of tea tree oil. Lemon juice is an acid and allows the dead skin to slough off easily while the sugar granules help to gently abrade the surface of the skin. Tee tree oil has strong antimicrobial properties and will help to prevent minor skin conditions. This remedy will not give you instant results but they will definitely improve the quality of your skin. Exfoliation also helps to even out your complexion and reduce blemishes.
