Constipation may mean different things to different people but it is always a discomforting notion. Constipation is something relative for different people, depending on their normal bowel movements. For some individuals it may be bowel movements anywhere fewer than thrice a week while for others it may be failure to evacuate the bowels for a single day.
When constipated the stools are likely to be small in size, dry and hard, making them difficult to eliminate. For some individuals passing stools when constipated may be very painful and they can also experience symptoms like bloating, straining and a feeling of fullness.
It is important that you keep in mind however that constipation is not a disease in itself, but is instead a symptom.
Almost all of us experience this painful and discomforting condition at some point of time or the other and in almost all cases dietary causes or a ‘poor diet’ are responsible. In most cases constipation is a temporary condition that resolves soon enough naturally and requires no medical intervention or remedies. In your case however the constipation could be considered to be quite severe as it is prolonged.
Prescription medications and over the counter laxatives can help evacuate the bowels, but this is just a temporary measure. Moreover if this is a recurrent problem it would be bad to take pharmaceutical products on such a frequent basis and it could even create a reliance on laxatives. In addition conventional medications only address the immediate problem but do not solve it completely. Natural treatments for constipation address the cause and therefore offer a long term solution. If the constipation is very severe however you may need medical treatment, but after the crisis at hand is resolved you will need to fall back to natural treatments.
Here are some measures you need to keep in mind to prevent frequent bouts of constipation. It is important that you actually make these efforts as such severe or chronic constipation can lead to very serious problems like piles, anal fissures or fecal impaction.
- Follow a well balanced diet with an adequate fiber content. This should include plenty of fresh fruits, veggies and whole grains.
- Make sure you are welll hydrated by consuming a lot of natural fluids and water.
- Give yourself uninterrupted and regular toilet time after meals.
- If you feel the need to evacuate the bowels do not resist it.
- Use natural colon cleansers.
If you do follow these measures try using natural laxatives on the rare occasions when you do experience constipation. Figs soaked overnight in water and consumed the following morning would serve as one such remedy.
