A migraine is classified as a kind of headache, but it is a lot more intense and painful than a normal headache. While the average headache is a mild condition migraine pain can be almost debilitating. Those who do suffer from migraines will be only too familiar with the peculiar pulsing or throbbing pain that afflicts a specific area of the head in a migraine.

Migraines also cause the individual to experience a heightened sensitivity to light and sound, which can cause feelings of nausea and even vomiting.

Migraines are much more likely to afflict women as compared to men and most people can in fact tell when they are about to come down with a migraine. This is because they will already begin to experience some of the other symptoms associated with a migraine induced sensitivity to light such as temporary loss of vision or flashing lights and zigzag lines.

Migraines are still not completely understood which is why there is so little that can be done by means of treatment. Although the causes are still debated some factors are known to trigger migraines and these would include stress, anxiety, lack of sleep or food, exposure to light and hormonal changes. Migraines can last for a few minutes to hours and can even occur frequently.

As mentioned earlier treatments are for the most part not very helpful in severe migraines or migraines that have a long duration. While the effectiveness of conventional treatments vary from individual to individual and depending on the severity of the migraine pain, alternative natural treatments offer some comfort. These are again not helpful in severe cases, but for individuals suffering frequent migraine attacks these serve as a more viable option as compared to a frequent intake of pharmaceutical products that may cause long term damage or dependency.

Here are some natural methods that are believed to help reduce the severity of migraines. The most important factor is of course avoidance of triggers.
  • Herbal remedies are being touted as the answer to migraines and there may be a lot of merit in these claims, but they need to be better investigated. Do not self prescribe herbal treatments however as many of them can pose health risks, which is why it would always be wise to consult your doctor before doing so.
  • Two areas of alternative medicine that are worth exploring are aromatherapy and acupuncture. Both methods are relatively safe and there are some well documented studies of the efficacy of such treatments. Yoga is also a worthy discipline that could offer some succor. Before trying any of these alternatives however consult and seek advice from experts in the field.
