Head lice infestations are problematic as these ectoparasites that thrive on your scalp can be a lot more than annoying. Head lice are not just embarrassing but also damaging as they weaken the roots of your hair and this ultimately would lead to hair loss. Although in most cases the effects are limited to irritation and weakening of or loss of hair, in some cases the infestation may cause more severe reactions, with the affected host experiencing fevers.
It is therefore necessary to be guarded so as to detect an infestation promptly and begin treatment to eliminate them swiftly and effectively.
Although head lice are more easily spread and picked up in crowded or unhygienic environments you should remember that the problem is not something you need to embarrassed of as it can strike no matter how clean and cautious you are at home. Kids can very easily pick up lice from school, play schools or nurseries where they are in close contact with other kids.
No matter how careful, clean and particular you are at home, children can very easily get lice from friends and classmates. Here's what you can do to combat this problem once and for all: Extract some onion juice in a small bowl, and use the juice as an application for your hair, massaging it slowly into the scalp. Allow the extract to remain on your scalp for at least three or four hours. The parasites that have been thriving in your hair will now be killed off because of the pungent sulfur content of onion juice. After this you will have to wash your hair out thoroughly to get rid of any dead lice on your scalp. Repeat this procedure for three consecutive days as the treatment will kill of lice, but the nits or eggs of the lice may still remain.
Raw custard apple ground to a powder with the seeds can make for another very effective remedy against lice. Keep the powder in an airtight box until you are ready to actually use it. Apply the powder onto your scalp gently, before going to bed. Wrap your head in a scarf or kerchief before lying down. This treatment should help you get rid of the lice and nits. You will of course need to wash your hair thoroughly the following morning. These are just a few of the commonly used home remedies to treat head lice.
