Acid reflux is a very common digestive problem, and it is one that we normally don’t pay adequate attention to. In this condition digestive acids in the stomach, flow up into the upper intestines and esophagus. The condition is not necessarily severe, but in most cases it is so.

It in fact becomes almost debilitating and even poses a risk of permanent damage to the stomach lining. Under normal circumstances the flow between the esophagus and stomach is controlled by band muscle tissue, referred to as LES, that prevents the contents of the stomach, acids included, from regurgitating.

Gastro esophageal disease or acid reflux is a physiological condition wherein there is a regurgitation of stomach contents into the esophagus and throat.

The condition is actually very common and is generally indicative of or caused by an inappropriate diet, an unhealthy sedentary lifestyle, lack of activity, and irregular meal timings. Although acid reflux in itself is not threatening, if neglected it can cause serious complications like a scarring or inflammation of the esophagus, and throat and breathing problems.

There are many choices that you have within conventional medical treatment but they are not recommended and don’t really eliminate the case or risk of the condition. Natural treatment plans are much more effective as the focus is on the causes rather than the symptoms. For an effective and lasting solution to the problem changes need to be made to your lifestyle and diet in particular. Moreover natural methods are a lot more advisable as they pose no risk from prolonged usage. The first and most logical step to correcting this disorder should be to correct your dietary deficiencies or excesses, and maintain a balanced wholesome one. It would be prudent to exclude ingredients like spices, caffeine, citrus fruits and fatty foods from your diet, and restrict or abstain from consuming alcohol. If you do smoke then make it a point to give up the habit. It is a major aggravator for the condition.

Discipline in your lifestyle is vital to overcoming the problem as an undisciplined irregular routine is a major cause of acid reflux. Never go to bed soon after meals. There should always be a gap of an hour or two between meals and sleep. Obesity is another factor that can trigger or aggravate the problem and make it worse. Another reason to exercise would simply be for the sake of physical activity. Physical activity is essential and whether you choose to join a gym, workout at home, or simply indulge in long walks or swimming, make sure you stay active.
