If the ear infection is in a young child, then the cause may be a combination of both the structure of the Eustachian tube and the type of foods the child is consuming. Many children outgrow ear infections when they get past seven or eight years old as the immune system matures and the shape of the Eustachian tube changes. Chronic ear infections often respond to dietary changes which remove food sensitivities. Common food sensitivities include wheat, cow's milk, soy, citrus, potatoes, tomatoes, eggs, etc. Ways to palliate acute ear infections/pain include garlic/mullein ear drops (in an olive oil base), grated potato poultices, and baked half onions (cooled) against the outer ear. Ensure the child is taking probiotics to replace the friendly bacteria which is being destroyed by the antibiotics. www.countrydoc.com
