Dandruff is caused by the excessive flaking of the scalp. The uppermost layer of skin is shed on a regular basis, but with dandruff, this process is accelerated. This causes thick white flakes of dead skin to be shed profusely – generally from the scalp.

Dandruff can be a chronic condition that will require specialized hair care on a regular basis to control the condition. However, it can also be brought on by specific triggers

Dandruff can be of two types – oily dandruff or dry dandruff. Both these types of dandruff depend on the individual’s skin type, so a person with oily skin will have oily dandruff, while a person with dry hair will suffer from dry dandruff.

If you have dry dandruff, you can use tea tree oil to get rid of this problem and if you have oily hair you can use fresh lemon juice to get rid of it. If you are using tea tree oil, dilute it with olive oil as it is a very potent oil. Mix equal amounts of tea tree oil and olive oil and apply it to your entire scalp. Dip a thick towel in hot water an squeeze it out and then wrap it around your head. This will allow the steam and heat from the towel to penetrate into your hair and scalp. This increases the amount of oil that is absorbed by your scalp and therefore increases the effectiveness of the treatment. Keep the towel on for at least 20 minutes and then wash your hair as usual. Tea tree oil is a strong anti-fungal agent and helps to eliminate the fungus that triggers dandruff.

You can apply the fresh lemon juice directly onto your scalp. If you wish to, you can add an equal amount of tomato juice and use this solution to massage your scalp. Both these juices are acidic in nature and reduce the amount of fungus present on the scalp. In addition to this, the juice also provides a hostile environment for the fungus and therefore prevents it from getting worse. You can use the steam method for this treatment as well to increase its effectiveness.

If your dandruff does not clear up, you can use a medicated shampoo containing Ketoconazole as it is very effective in eliminating dandruff. If your dandruff does not clear up within a month of treatment, visit a dermatologist as it could be a symptom of a more serious skin condition.
