Constipation is a very common and widespread problem worldwide. In recent decades however chronic and extreme constipation have become more common, a fact that can be attributed to the changed dietary patterns, particularly in developed nations. The definition or degree of constipation may vary from individual to individual but extreme constipation would safely be described as a decrease in the frequency of evacuation of the bowels, difficulty and pain in the passage of stools, or a marked hardening and drying of the stool due to a reduced water content.

Constipation is generally accompanied with symptoms such as bloating, straining to pass stools, and a constant feeling of discomfort and fullness. Sever and chronic constipation is however a very serious matter and should be a cause for concern as it can cause complications such as piles, hemorrhoids, lazy colon, fecal impaction, anal fissures, obstipation and even rectal prolapse. It is important that you treat this condition very seriously as it is a warning sign and the ailments it forebodes can be easily averted with some minor changes top diet and lifestyle.

Constipation in itself is a mild condition of no great consequence but frequent or severe constipation can be very dangerous and constipation is largely caused due to a poor diet. There are many natural methods that you can employ to treat the problem, and diet being the most important is the first that we should address.
  • A well balanced and nutritious diet that is rich in fiber will help alleviate and reduce the occurrence of this problem. Fresh fruits, veggies, whole grains, nuts and legumes are good sources of fiber.
  • Your fluid intake is the next most important factor. An increased intake of fluids will not only help lubricate the food and intestines but also act as a stool softener, facilitating easier passage. Water is the best choice, but you can also consume fresh fruit juices.
  • Physical activity or exercise is important so make sure if nothing else you at least go for a ten to twenty minute walk daily. This is important as physical activity reduces the time frame that is necessary for the passage of food through the intestines. This also means that less water is absorbed by the body, which in other words means that the stool is softer and easier to pass.
  • Give yourself regular and uninterrupted toilet time.
  • Try not to delay bowel movements indefinitely.
