Asthma is chronic respiratory disorder that affects the airways. In an asthma patient the inner walls of these affected airways become inflamed and sore. This makes them a lot more sensitive then normal, and increases the risk of reactions to any irritant or substances that you are allergic to.

When the airways react to such irritants they are narrowed, which means that the air supplied to your lungs is significantly reduced. This results in wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing. The symptoms are generally more pronounced early in the morning or at night.

At times there may be a worsening of these symptoms and such severe bouts are referred to as asthma attacks. Asthma attacks can be very severe due to the narrowing of the airways, to such an extent that the vital organs may suffer from a lack of oxygen. If medical attention is not provided in severe attacks it can even result in death.

Asthma being a chronic disease has no cure, but there are many medications and natural remedies that can help provide quick relief from the symptoms and also control and minimize the frequency of asthma attacks. Natural remedies can help improve your condition significantly, but they can not be relied on alone. Natural remedies can be used in combination with your medical treatment and may even help reduce your dependence on pharmaceuticals however. Whatever you do plan to try out, make it a point to first inform your doctor, as in the case of herbal remedies particularly, there are many herbs that can cause negative reactions with certain medications and other conditions.

Lifestyle modifications are of the greatest importance as avoiding exposure or minimizing exposure to known allergens and irritants is the most important strategy. In addition to this you would need to follow a healthy well balanced diet, so as to strengthen the immune system. A regular routine and disciplined lifestyle will also help a lot. Practices like aromatherapy help a lot, and you can use steam inhalations, vapo rubs and inhalers or diffusers to reduce symptoms. Being physically fit is also important and daily walks or swimming and cycling can also help. A practice like yoga would however be most beneficial as it has been found to help many patients suffering from yoga. This is because, in addition to improving your physical fitness levels, it strengthens your immune system, and most importantly improves the health of your lungs and strengthens them. Yoga places great weight on breath exercises, known as pranayama, and all physical postures that comprise a yoga session have to be practiced in synchrony with these breath techniques. This has been found to improve lung and respiratory health. Another benefit it offers is in terms of relaxation and stress management. Yoga is truly relaxing and it’s meditative practices can help you cope with stress and better equip you to deal with situations in which you would normally panic. This ability is again handy for any asthmatic as stress and anxiety can often trigger asthma attacks.
