Jock itch or tinea cruris, as it is referred to in medical terminology, is a fungal infection caused by dermatophytes. These are a group of mold like fungi that are responsible for a number of tinea infections like toenail fungus, athlete’s foot, and ringworm. Tinea infections are more bothersome than serious, and should be no cause for worry.

Prompt and effective treatment can cure the infection easily.

Jock itch affects the skin around the genitals, the buttocks, and the inner thighs. The skin that is affected becomes itchy and red and can often appear in a ring shaped pattern.

Like all other fungi it requires moisture and warmth to thrive and these areas provide them with the ideal environment. People who tend to sweat a lot are therefore a lot more prone to jock itch. Overweight individuals are also at risk, and though the infection is largely prevalent among men, women too can be affected.

Keeping in mind the conditions that fungi require to thrive it is most important that you keep the groin area clean and dry. No amount of medication or home remedies will help if personal or self care practices are not followed. Conventional medications like over the counter topical antifungal ointments and lotions can help significantly, and they can also be supported with potent natural remedies. If you have a recurring problem and do not wish to use conventional medications you can avail of the multitude of natural remedies.

Here are some self care tips and natural remedies that can help cure jock itch.

Make sure you always dry yourself thoroughly after cleansing. Use a hair dryer on minimal heat settings if needed. Make it a point to always wear clean cotton underwear and change your undergarments and clothing the moment it becomes damp and sweaty. Avoid tight fitting clothes, and never share clothing, linen, towels or any other personal items.

Jock itch is mostly not very severe and can be controlled with some simple yet effective home remedies.
Tea tree oil and garlic posses strong antifungal properties and can be used against the infection. While tea tree oil should be applied directly or preferably through hot water soaks with the oil added in, garlic can be consumed or applied topically. Garlic cloves may be blended with olive oil to make a paste that can be applied. Applying cornstarch and having warm salt baths can also help facilitate healing.
