Sun burns are caused when the skin is exposed to the harmful UV rays of the sun. A person experiencing sun burns will display the following symptoms:
- Due to the over exposure to direct sunlight, the skin will become red in color. Additionally it could also take on a darker shade than the normal skin color, in the affected areas.
- A person could also experience general fatigue as over exposure to the sun could cause dehydration.
Melanin, a pigment present in the skin helps the body protect itself from the harmful UV rays of the sun. When the body is exposed to the sun, the skin produces more of this pigment; this causes the skin to appear darker than its normal complexion.
The darkening of the skin due to this process is more commonly known as sun tan. However, overexposure to sunlight damages the skin and causes it to become sore and inflamed. This condition is known as a sunburn and can be extremely painful. The severity of sunburn depends on the individual’s skin type as well as the amount of time spent in the sun. Nausea and giddiness should not be ignored as these are the symptoms of a more serious condition known as sun poisoning. Immediate medical attention is necessary in such cases. A sun burn will heal in due course, but the following simple home remedies will help you get over the pain and speed up the healing process.
- Keep the affected area moisturized. An over the counter moisturizer would be ideal for this purpose.
- A paste made of water melon and yogurt would also provide you with much relief. Water melon is a natural coolant, while yogurt can be used as a natural moisturizer. Yogurt will also supply the skin with healthy bacteria needed for skin repair. You could also include the same in your diet as water melon can also help rehydrate your system.
- Honey is a very good natural moisturizer. Apply honey to soothe your skin. Honey also has anti bacterial and anti fungal properties, thus it will help prevent any microbes from thriving on the broken skin.
- If the burning sensation is unbearable you could apply a cold compress to the burn. This would help soothe the pain and itchiness.
- It is very important to stay away from the sun during this time, as further exposure would only worsen your painful situation.
- Drink plenty of water during this time, sun burns also cause dehydration.
These remedies would help speed up the healing process. Additionally following the below suggestions would help you avoid sun burns in the future:
- Always use a sun screen lotion when you step out of your home during the day. Wear loose flowing clothes, as this will help your skin breathe better and also drain out moisture instead of trapping it.
- When visiting a beach or swimming pool, it is imperative that you use a sun screen lotion that is water proof. This is because normal sun screen is washed away by water.
