Dry skin in winter is a global problem caused by Vata dosha of ayurveda. Use warm sesame oil and massage the skin lightly all over. Do not use soap. Use green gram or bengal gram floor with a little milk mixed therein to make paste. Bath using this paste will remove excess oil, but leave sufficient oil to keep the skin smooth and silky.

Use creams, soaps and moisturizers according to your skin type, because if you are allergic to a particular chemical, these creams would have an adverse effect on your skin. A dermatologist will help you to decide on the correct lotions to be used on your skin.

  • Moisturize your legs when little damp after you bathe (bathe with lukewarm water. Avoid hot water) this will help to combat the dryness.
  • Oatmeal powder can be used to soothe the skin. Add 2 cups of oatmeal powder in your bathtub, or tie oatmeal powder in a handkerchief and substitute it for soap. After bath apply Aloe Vera gel to soothe and heal your skin.
  • Take milk bath once in a week to nourish and soothe your skin. Add 250ml of milk powder along with 4-5 drops of almond oil in your tub. You can also soak your legs in this water. This combination will work wonders on your dry skin.
  • Avoid sudden spurts in temperature, when you use a heater in winters, use humidifiers along with it, as it will help to reduce the amount of moisture loss from the skin.
  • Include foods such as eggs, onions, asparagus and garlic in your diet as they are high in sulfur; that keeps the skin smooth and young.
  • Hydrate your skin well by drinking enough water and by eating fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Exercise to boost your blood circulation and nourish your skin from within.
