Acidity and indigestion are very common problems, and can cause a great deal of discomfort. Indigestion is commonly used to refer to symptoms that would include stomach pain, bloating, heartburn, acidity, and flatulence. Irregular eating habits, over eating, and consumption of unhealthy foods or certain dietary and lifestyle habits can contribute to the problem.
Food allergies, a general lack of exercise or physical activity and inadequate cooking of foods can also cause indigestion and the related problems of acidity.
The most important way to treat acidity is by looking into the causes, and remedying your lifestyle and diet habits. Here are some of the common natural remedies and lifestyle changes that are helpful for problems of indigestion.
Diet and Lifestyle:
- Avoid eating large meals; instead switch to four or five smaller meals through the course of the day. This avoids undue pressure on the gastric system.
- Always eat a light dinner and never go to bed immediately after eating. Sleeping on a full stomach only increases the risk of heartburn and acid reflux.
- Avoid consuming foods that are rich in fats and cut down on your intake of junk foods and red meats. Fruits and vegetables are much easier on your system.
- Follow a disciplined schedule with fixed and regular meal timings.
- Physical activity is also important no matter how brief or how mild. Even daily walks for ten minutes can help a lot. Physical disciplines like yoga would be the best remedy as many of the yoga positions specifically address your digestive health.
Natural Remedies: - Baking soda can help remedy your problem if consumed as a mixture with water. Mix equal parts of the two and consume it for immediate relief.
- Cumin seeds are also very helpful for digestive problems, and are widely used in the Indian sub continent. You can simply add a teaspoon to a glass of water and drink it.
- Buttermilk in itself is extremely soothing for your digestive system and consuming it after meals would be a good idea. You can add a teaspoon or two of coriander juice to your glass of fresh buttermilk for an effective indigestion remedy.
- Ginger is another useful ingredient and simply chewing on a small piece of fresh ginger, along with some salt can help stimulate digestion. Do this around five minutes before your meals.
- Cloves are also useful ingredients and can be chewed on or added to your diet. They boost the digestive functions and encourage enzymatic flow.
