It's not just goitre but in general, women in developing countries particularly South East Asia and Africa are easily prone to ill health than men. Women are more disposed to goitre and other illnesses like protein-energy malnutrition, anaemia and other micronutrient defiencies due to social reasons. Gender bias favors men and boys. Nutritious food is kept aside for men which women are deprived of. Social factors consider women secondary and deny them good food. Hence, women are targets for malnutrition whether it is goitre or any other illness. Iodine deficiency is the most common cause for goitre which can cause mental retardation.
