Athletes foot is a fungal skin infection and is a contagious disease. It generally affects the area between the toes. Medically known as tinea pedis the fungus lives off dead skin cells.

Fungi thrive in moist and warm places and typically such environments are found in gyms, locker rooms, swimming pools, and public showers. Athlete’s foot is not a dangerous infection and can be treated quite easily, but delaying treatment or improper and ineffective treatment can prolong the infection and make it more resilient. Anti fungal medications or ointments available over the counter are quite effective for fungal skin infections like athletes foot but they can also be treated very effectively at home with various natural ingredients that are not only easily available but also inexpensive.

Athletes foot is not just unsightly but can also be quite discomforting because of the itchiness and burning sensation between the infected toes. Sharing foot ware or personal items like towels can transmit the infection to others. Personal hygiene is therefore of the utmost importance.
  • Always make it a point to dry your feet thoroughly after washing them. You can use a hair dryer to do so, but make sure you keep it on the minimal heat setting to avoid burning your foot.
  • Try and use open foot ware like sandals instead of boots or sneakers. If you do have to wear closed shoes try and air out your feet at every opportunity.
  • Before donning any foot ware or even socks dust some anti fungal powder onto your feet.
  • Make sure you change your socks frequently, and try to use cotton socks instead of any other material.

In addition to these practices you can try out these home remedies to cure the condition.
  • Baking soda, which you would probably find in almost any kitchen, can be used as an effective remedy. Just make a paste of the baking soda by adding some water to it and apply it over the infected areas. Allow it to stay on until it dries completely, after which you can rinse it off.
  • Garlic also possesses strong antiseptic and anti fungal properties that make it quite useful for an athletes foot infection. Simply placing a few slices of fresh garlic in your shoes before wearing them for the day can help significantly.
  • Add some boric acid, Epsom salt, and vinegar to a basin of warm water and soak your feet in it for at least fifteen minutes on a daily basis.
