Athletes foot or tinea pedis, as it is medically known, is quite a common fungal infection. As the name suggest the condition has traditionally been more common among athletes but not because it specifically strikes at athletes. It has more to do with the environment and conditions under which most athletes perform.
Locker rooms, poolside showers and baths, damp towels, and sweaty socks and shoes are some of the ideal breeding grounds for fungus and they also happen to be common conditions that athletes are exposed to. Fungi thrive under any moist and warm conditions and anyone who is exposed to such an environment can pick up the infection if not careful.
People who sweat a lot on the feet are at a particularly high risk of picking up an athletes foot infection.
Walking around barefoot in places like public showers, where a lot of other people also walk barefoot puts you at a high risk. You can easily prevent or minimize the risk of infection, but the condition is not something you need to worry too much about as it can be easily treated. Almost all fungal skin infections can be effectively treated at home with natural remedies that are as reliable as most medicated products available at your pharmacy. The main attraction however is that they are easily available, inexpensive and pose almost no risk.
Here are some remedies that you can use to cure your athletes foot condition.
- Warm water soaks are the best treatment for athletes foot. Add vinegar to the warm water so that the ratio is 1:5, and allow your feet to soak for at least half an hour. Do this twice a day.
- Tea tree oil is the most popular natural solution for fungal infections because of its strong antifungal properties. Undiluted tea tree oil can however damage your skin. Prepare a warm water solution with 40 drops of the oil added to a liter of water and soak your feet in the solution for at least ten minutes. After drying your feet apply some diluted tea tree oil solution to the affected region.
- A baking soda paste can also help treat the infection and you just need to leave it on until it dries completely.
In addition to these remedies however it is important that you follow some basic practices of hygiene. Whenever you wash or soak your feet make sure you dry them thoroughly. You can use a hair dryer, but make sure it’s not hot enough to burn the skin. Before wearing any foot wear, including socks, apply an anti fungal powder. Always wear clean socks and try to wear open shoes or sandals or if wearing closed shoes give your feet a chance to air out periodically.
