A kidney stone (Urolithiasis)is a hard mineral and crystalline material formed within the kidney or urinary tract and moves out through the ureters, thereby causing an infection which can lead to permanent kidney damage. Kidney stones form when there is a decrease in urine volume or an excess of stone-forming substances in the urine. The most common type of kidney stone are calcium oxalate or phosphate.

Other compounds that form stones in the urinary tract are uric acid and the amino acid cystine.

Causes

- People suffering from inflammatory bowel disease, cystinuria, hyperparathyroidism and acidosis
- Gouty patients (High uric acid in urine)
- Decrease in urine volume
- Intake of diuretics, antacids and anti-HIV drugs
- Hypercalciuria(calcium oxalate/phosphate stones).
