Remedies for Urinary Tract Infection

What is the best remedy for urinary tract infection?
( 9 Jun 2009)

Infections of the urinary tract are extremely common, and their occurrence is particularly high among women. Men are not affected as often, but when they are, the condition is likely to be a lot more serious. In a healthy bladder, the urine is under normal circumstances free of bacteria.

Due to the proximity of the rectal and vaginal area, bacteria may enter the urethra and travel through the urinary tract to the bladder. Under normal circumstances the bladder can cleanse itself of such a bacterial invasion, but if for some reason it fails to do so, the bacteria could cause an infection.

Although the very mention or though of a urinary tract infection makes you squirm in discomfort, not everyone is likely to experience symptoms, but most will experience at least a few. The common symptoms would be a frequent urge to urinate, despite the fact that there may be little or no urine passed. Urination is almost always painful, with a burning sensation in the bladder or urethra. Patients may also feel fatigued, and exhausted throughout the day. Urine may also appear to be cloudy, but if there is a presence of blood as well it would indicate that the problem is a lot more severe. Nausea, vomiting, or pain in the back and below the ribs would also be indicative of a kidney infection, which is a lot more serious.

Common urinary infections can however be treated very effectively at home itself, without any need for pharmaceutical products. If the home treatments do not show results, no matter how gradual, make sure you get medical attention immediately. Natural remedies can help facilitate healing, and hasten recovery in such a situation. Delaying treatment however is the worst thing you can do, as this would lead to a worsening of the condition, making it harder to cure.

Here are some remedies you should try out.
  • Drink a lot more water than you normally do, as this will help dilute your urine, and also increase the frequency of urine, with actual passage of urine. This may seem unappealing, but is actually necessary, so that the bacteria can get flushed out of your system.
  • Fresh fruit juices are also a great way to hydrate yourself and also a great source of nourishment. Coconut juice is supposed to be particularly helpful, and also relieves the pain. Cranberry juice is particularly effective, and the fresh variety is preferable.
  • Do not consume alcoholic or caffeinated beverages.
  • Soaking in contrast sitz baths can also help significantly by improving circulation. You can get similar results by alternating between cold and hot compresses.
