Home remedies for dry lips are extremely effective when used on a regular basis. You can use these remedies to treat as well as prevent your lips from drying. Extreme weather and a very dry climate can aggravate this problem.

It is therefore very important to follow a few daily care practices to ensure that your lips remain soft and supple even in the harshest weather.

The skin contains glands that secrete a natural oil called sebum. Sebum helps to trap the moisture within your skin and forms a protective barrier to keep your skin from drying.

Unfortunately, your lips do not contain these glands which is why it is necessary to apply a moisturizer on a regular basis. In addition to this, the skin on your lips is extremely thin and fragile and is therefore vulnerable to drying as well as damage.

Since your lips are already very dry, you will need to get rid of the excess thickened skin before you try to moisturize your lips. In order to get rid o this excess skin you will need to first loosen the excess skin and then gently slough it off. This will have to be done very carefully or else you can damage your lips and cause them to crack or bleed. Before you go to bed, mix a little unsalted butter along with an equal amount of petroleum jelly and lather it generously on and around your lips. If available, use virgin coconut oil and petroleum jelly instead as the coconut oil has several fatty acids that will help to soften your lips. In the morning, you will find that the upper layer of skin on your lips is loose. Do not try to peel it off as you may peel off healthy skin by mistake. Mix 10 drops of lemon juice in 2 teaspoons of honey and mix it well. You can add a drop of almond oil to this mixture if you wish to. Add about 1 spoon of sugar to this mixture and stir it around. Leave the mixture aside for about two minutes so that it starts to dissolve. Mix it around once more for about a minute as this will ensure that the corners of the sugar crystals dissolve. Massage your lips gently with this paste so that the layers of dead skin slowly come off. Do not try to hurry this process by using excess force as this will injure your lips. Once you are done, rinse your lips with warm water and pat them dry. Mix one drop each of olive oil and flaxseed oil and apply this blend of oil to your lips. This is an excellent nourishing moisturizer for dry lips. You can mix larger amounts of these oils and store them in a small container. Use this throughout the day to keep your lips moisturized.
