Most lower back pain is caused due to overuse, muscle strain, injury to the ligaments, muscles and discs that support your spine. According to a number of experts prolonged strain on the spine can bring about an imbalance in the spine structure. This results in a constant tension in the muscles, ligaments, discs, and bones, making the back even more vulnerable to injuries.

Back pain and any other spinal problems need to be treated very seriously as they can spiral out of control. Moreover, very serious problems can even leave you disabled for life. Sometimes if muscles in the region are strained we may tend to move around in a different manner from usual to avoid the pain, but this can simply result in strain and pressure on other areas that are not used to functioning in this manner.

For the reasons mentioned low back pain is therefore best treated with a sound medical diagnosis to begin with. While mild back aches can be treated at home, it is not worth the risk. Treatment naturally depends on the specific cause of the pain. Other factors like the overall health status and levels of activity also determine the next course of action.

There are quite a few natural treatments and remedies for lower back pain that can be administered at home, but great caution needs to be exercised as even the slightest error or wrongly performed exercise can result in a more serious injury only exacerbating your condition. Poorly performed exercises are in fact one of the major causes of bodily injuries.  When dealing with back pains and aches your best bet is to strengthen the spine and make every effort to keep it flexible and supple. While a healthy and balanced diet, and proper weight control can help, they are inadequate without the right exercise. Some amount of physical activity and exercise is essential.

Yoga is the best and most effective therapy for spinal health and also for recuperation from spinal injuries. Practicing yoga or even aerobics can help strengthen the spine and maintain flexibility. This will reduce the risk of injuries. Do not attempt to perform any of these activities at home however and unsupervised. Even when signing up for a class make sure that your trainer is qualified and experienced in dealing with spinal injuries. Certain yoga postures can even cause further damage and therefore need to be avoided.

Traditional Chinese Medicine is another alternative discipline that has come to be highly regarded and it does offer some hope for patients of spinal injuries and for lower back pain. Most of its activities here focus on lower back stretches, in some ways very similar to yoga.
